Crosscultural Christmas
Thursday, 25 December 2008
The last weeks of lecture phase have passed by and we are getting ready as a team to fly out to Asia on the 29th ! We had a wonderful week of teaching about the Holy Spirit and how we can apply the teachings to our lives as doctors. The Holy Spirit is an amazing strength that we have within us. He teaches us, guides us and comforts us like Jesus did with his disciples. We also learned more about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and other gifts that we receive from God. It was an adventure to dig into the bible and discuss the works of the Spirit inside of us and in the world ! Read 1 Corinthians 12 and also Acts chapter 2-4 !!
The last week of lectures was about Crosscultural Communication which is really awesome because I learned so much about my Chinese collegue, about hot and cold climate cultures...And I am not talking about temperature ! That was so eyeopening and brought so much more unity into the team. Now we laugh about these little misunderstandings that we had and our different mindsets and approaches to things. It's just so funny that we kind of assume that the other person thinks exactly like we think and knows what we mean when we ask direct questions. We learned about ways of communication and how to be polite in hot climate cultures when we turn down a cup of coffee several times although we'd really like one. They know the procedure, make the coffee although you persist not to want one, you sit down and drink it together. It is all about relationship, not about the actual food or drink. In northern Europe we are very task oriented and it's a lot about agendas and timing our daily schedule. In hot climate cultures it's about events and not about a time schedule. All these details and many more really help us as an international mission with so many mixed cultures on base to communicate well and love and honour each other just the way we are. ..

Merry Christmas to all of you and may you be blessed abundantly in 2009 !!

The past couple days on base were all about relationships which usually includes a lot of food. We have amazing mealtimes and the best foods, snacks, chocolate, candy, lollies all the time. It's great ! Today on the 24th we had a European Christmas party on a porch with waffles with cherries, cookies, pop and many more snacks. We sang traditional Christmas Carols and also had our friends sing songs in their own language like French, Finnish and Dutch. Tomorrow we have a large breakfast and the excitement to open our stockings that have been filled over the last weeks by everybody around. There will be more food throughout the day and the day after (boxing day) in form of a barbeque at the beach with more than 350 people ! It's awesome, I love it very much and I hope you love your holidays too.

Christmas and your worldview
Sunday, 07 December 2008
Wow, again two weeks have gone by in a flash. Christmas season has begun and it is getting warmer in Perth. I love it. I spent my FIRST day at the beach yesterday, had fish and chips and ice cream with a friend and enjoyed a day off in the heat !
Many greetings to Europe where you have snow and enjoy cold nights next to hot stoves or a sparkling fire ...
God provides
The last weeks have been incredible and there were a lot of amazing things happening. As I have mentioned before, our finances as a base for outreach, airfares and groundfees were due on Dec. 3rd. Many of the students were trusting for finances which came in through friends, family and supporters or even unknown sources. As a whole base we have seen over 400.000 Australian Dollars come in within a few weeks. It seems a miracle to me every time it happens and once again we can say that God is indeed a wonderful provider for all that we need. Thank you everyone who provided for me or the school, it's been a blessing and I have all my finances for Asia and Vanuatu now ! However, there are more students who come from poor countries and who don't have supporters or churches who stand behind them. So there is still a need of finance on the base and we are trusting God for the rest we need to see everybody hop on the planes at the end of December. If you feel led to give, feel free to contact me and I will let you know the easiest way for you to do it.
Week 8, Paediatrics and the value of children
The topic of the week was Paediatrics and we had a wonderful man with us who serves as a doctor in the nations and spoke about Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery for both developed and non-developed nations. He has a wide range of experience in this area and we enjoyed having him with us. We not only discussed medical topics but also had a closer look at the person of Jesus and how he treated children, gave them value and teaches us "grown-ups" to become like children again, because "they inherit the kingdom of heaven". Look at the children around you and adopt their unshakable faith and trust - that's what Jesus wants us to be like: children full of faith and trust in our heavenly Father who cares and provides. ..no doubt about it.
Week 9, Medical and Biblical Worldview
This week we learned that it's all about worldview. As a Health Care Team we can go into developing nations with the right heart and attitude, good intentions and love for the people..but not change anything... After we leave everything goes back to the old ways...people get sick again because of the same diseases we had treated just a week ago. Why is that ? And do we want to change that? Or do we just want to go into nations where we can take pictures of us with dark babies on our arms, show them around and tell about the wonderful things we did... I am writing this with a bit of a provocative note on purpose. Do we want to see change and transformation ? That's where worldview comes in. It plays a crucial role in why nations develop or not, why villages are transformed, principles of sanitation and hygiene, nutrition is put into practice. The most important point in a biblical worldview perpective is the value of the individual ! In nations where children, esp. girls are not given any value in their first year of life - and very little up to the age of five - they will not be taken care of the way they should. The men and workers are fed first, the boys over the age of five next, whatever is left over goes to the women and female children. Children die of malnutrition where there are chicken, banana trees and beans around. Why ? Maybe fatalistic beliefs... "If God wants them to live they will live..if they die they die, there is nothing we can do". In some nations cultural beliefs and practices teach that chicken needs to be sacrificed to the gods for protection, eggs is adult food, animal meats are sacrificed to the water god in the river (which pollutes the water the people drink, wash and use for cooking), water given to a person with a fever harms the body, wounds are treated with cow dung and sacrifices to ancesters that are angry with the sick person.... the list goes on and on. Now picture a Health Care Team come into the village offering medical treatment and teachings. Yes, the people might be open, but where will they go after we have left ? The witchdoctor ? They will sacrifice to Gods that don't exist, abandon outhouses and latrines because they don't understand the meaning of them. Why do things they have never done before ? Sickness comes from evil spirits alone... Malaria, parasites, the use of clean water doesn't have meaning to them.
What we need to change to really make a change is the worldview. God doesn't intend sickness, he wants health and wellness for every person. So take His book and read it and apply it to your life. The bible is full of Health Care tips, the way we ought to live - physically well, spiritually healthy and having a clear mindset with the knowledge of a loving God who cares about the individual.
When does life begin ? Does God care about the newborn ? Read Psalm 39, read the first chapter of the gospel of Luke. Oh yes, he does. He knows us well from the day of conception. Is that only a blob of jelly to you ? God Himself came to earth as a baby and once was that blob of jelly. This blob turned into a baby, was born, grew up, brought healing and restoration to many and died on the cross for the salvation of all people.
Life is valuable and we need to tell the world. I love being a doctor and I want to go out there and heal, restore and teach about Jesus. But I can't go as a doctor alone because nothing would change longterm. I want to bring Jesus into the nations so that they can be changed through him, to tell them that they are loved and valuable, that they can do nothing to earn love and value, but that somebody has given them exactly that on the day of conception in their mother's womb.
Ponder Jesus in these next weeks before we celebrate his birthday ! Have a wonderful, joyful Christmas season, be blessed by your loved ones and know that you are precious. With much love from Perth, Sina

Off to Asia and Vanuatu
Sunday, 23 November 2008
Yes, finally we know where we are going as a team for the next quarter. We are very excited to go to the heart of Asia and the beautiful pacific island of Vanuatu which is close to Fiji and other islands that I cannot pronounce right now. It's going to be a challenging but also awesome time. Asia will be entirely different from Vanuatu, it's like going from one strange world into another. As a team we still don't have all the finances for airfares and groundfees but we see donations coming in constantly and we have no doubt that we will have everything on our due date which is December 3rd.
We will be in Asia for 6 weeks, have a quick stopover in Perth and then move on to Vanuatu to meet with another team who is doing ministry over there as well. At that point we will leave Jules, our leader, behind as she will be over 35 weeks of pregnancy and not allowed to go by plane anymore. She will go back to Perth with her husband Joe, getting prepared for becoming parents and enjoy summer together.
How things will look like specifically nobody can tell at this point, but we are all very excited to go to both places and find out what doors open and who we can bless with skills and support, both in health care and spiritually. I will try to keep you updated on a regular basis but also will be careful what to share over the net related to names of places and individuals.
The last weeks of teaching:
We had a variety of teachings on Parasites, infectious diseases that are typical of developing nations and a whole week on HIV/AIDS which was absolutely amazing. Did you know that HIV/AIDS could be removed from the planet within 30 years from now if only sex would be kept within marriage ? Transmission through the sexual route is about 86% !
The two doctors who covered week 5 and 6 are well experienced and were able to answer many questions way beyond the subjects they were assigned to do. One of our workshops covered "anaesthetics out of the box" (local anaesthesia) in week 5 and this week's workshop included dental health. We had a local dentist teach us (in theory) how to give mandibular blocks (numbing the lower back teeth), give local anaesthetics for all other teeth and how to pull them. It's not as simple as it sounds but it's quite safe if you follow some rules hahaha, we had a lot of fun ! Did you know that you don't actually pull teeth, but that you rock and push them out ? And did you know that research has shown that flossing your teeth has not much effect on preventing cavaties and decay ? Rather use flouride tooth paste (basically every toothpaste in the western world is flouridized) and after spitting leave a layer on the teeth and don't rinse before going to bed !
The last week was about Servant Leadership and Humility. It's the Jesus-way which is totally opposite of how the world operates but it is the most effective way to show God's love for the nations as well as individuals. The more responsibility you are given the less rights you have and you become a servant all the more. God called us to serve and to love one another, we see amazing things happen when we follow his examples and are blessed in our own lives by doing as he says. I am deeply challenged by the teaching as well as the speakers who live out the love of Jesus that they have experienced in their own life.
Let me know what you think and keep in touch. Thank you for being a part of my life. I appreciate and thank you for every email, phonecall or letter from you. Have a wonderful week and a good start into December.
