Obstetrics and more...
Sunday, 19 October 2008
The last week we had a fabulous time with Dr. Barbara Elgar who taught about Obstetrics in less resourced environments. She is a very sweet lady who has worked in Africa for quite a while and brought valuable experiences to the school. We heard everything about complications in pregnancy and childbirth, management and also how to set up a clinic with very limited resources in the bush. Twice a week we have workshops where we get a little more practical and suture sponges as if they were episiotomy wounds, we deliver breeches and twins and go through step by step management of shoulder dystocia with a baby doll and plastic pelvis. It's great, we are having a lot of fun.
It's not only about medical input:
Besides all the medical input we have regular worship and prayer times as "church family". In free/study time we work on a spiritual journal and write about what God has been doing in our life during the week. It's all about a close relationship with him and getting to know the true living God who we serve. It's an adventure to go on evangelism nights and see people respond to what we share. This is what we do once a week as a base in teams of ten to twenty and then split of in threes and twos to pray for people or tell them about Jesus. You know what ? The world is hungry for the truth and they long to know about a loving God who wants to give them eternal life and peace. On the first evangelism night we talked to many people in Perth and 4 of them gave their life to Jesus on the spot. I am sure God prepared them and lead us to cross their way. Sometimes we meet people who ask in astonishment:"Why hasn't anybody told me about Jesus before ? Why did it take you so long to share ?"
God provides:
Last Saturday we spend all morning and afternoon at a gas station raising money through car washes that we offered for donations. We were given over 200 Australian Dollars which we put aside for one girl's lecture fees. She is still in need of about 2000 Australian Dollars (AUD) but we are in faith that it will come in very soon !! There are regular fundraisers on the base for various ministries that need money for airfares, travel and the like. Friday night we had a worship service with a few hundred people on base and took an offering which met the amount of 20.000 AUD !!! Crazy, but true ! The ministry called "Island Breeze" was in need of more than 40.000 Dollars for the whole team to go on outreach. So half of the need was met in just one night. On Saturday night they were performing an incredible show with island dancing and singing. It was awesome and another offering added over 2200 Dollars to the amount. It is very encouraging and shows how generous God is - He loves to give through a joyful and willing heart.
I am very excited about next week's teaching by Peter Brownhill. He is part of the leadership team and husband to the base directer Shirley. He will teach about Integrated Medical Missions. More about that next week. All my love from here to you.

The first week back in Perth
Sunday, 12 October 2008
The first week is over, the weather is getting warmer every day as we have spring time in Australia. I really enjoy being here again..meeting "old" friends and making new ones. We have had our first lectures this week which were about the character of God in context of medical missions and about the biblical foundation of medicine. It was awesome and inspiring.
The workload for the school is not too overwhelming but we will not get bored for even a minute either. The "homework" involves two bookreports, a weekly spiritual journal with speific question for each week, we call the journal CIR (Creative Integrative Record). It also involves a project related to injustices in health care/medicine all around the globe, bible reading and lots of medical reviews and study. AWESOME. As being student and staff at the same time I am allowed to take part in staff activities, meetings and training on the base which is really great and I am thankful for.
There is still a lot of time to bond and hang out with the other students and people on the base. On Saturday our team joined with the YMT-Team (Youth Ministry Training) on a day trip to Mandurah, a small harbour town near Perth. We had a lunch picnic, icecream and played soccer (!!) on a beachvolleyball-field that had no net. I even scored two goals ! We had so much fun, it was a blast !
Next week we will have lectures about Obstetrics (deliveries, mother and child healthcare) in less resourced areas by a woman doctor who has lived and worked in developing nations for quite some time and has gained valuable experiences.
Well, I'll keep you informed. Write to me if you can, I love to hear from you.

Leaving for Perth, Australia, again
Friday, 26 September 2008
So, what was going on from Aug. 07 to Sept. 08 ?
As most of you know I had been working in Psychiatry for about a year in Germany and have just quit my job a couple of weeks ago. During that time I had many opportunities to learn more about psychiatric illnesses, addiction and the connection with spirituality which was in ways an amazing eye opener and reason to dig deeper into God and be grateful for him being the "senior physician" in charge ! I loved working with mentally sick, broken and hopeless people. Being with them and taking care of them taught me humility in various ways and helped me stay relaxed in the most turbulent situations. Other than that I had some of the best colleagues in the house who became close friends and happened to be excellent cooks as well, hahaha. Isn't it awesome to work in a team where you find support, an ear at the right time, a good meal when hungry and a laugh when you are down ? Very antidepressive !!
So, it all turned out to be an awesome experience, medically and spiritually, which was another step towards my goal to finish my GP training in Germany. Well, I have another 2,5 years to go but as you who know me well might have assumed...it's not gonna happen in one piece.

Many of you know about my long term vision to work with ywam in Perth as a doctor in missions being involved with the Doctors Reaching School (DRS). This school is running from October 08 to March 09 for the very first time in Perth. Who ever hasn't checked it out yet please do: www.ywamperth.org.au/drs
I am given the opportunity to take part in the school and staff it at the same time. Therefore I am leaving for Perth on Sept 29th. The first three months will be lecture phase where we have experienced missionaries and doctors come to the school and teach about their specialty and beyond. After about 12 weeks we will leave for outreach in late December which will be in Asia and the Pacific region (possibly North-India, Cambodia and the Australian outback). These are the plans for now. How everything is going to work out and what exactly we are going to do and stuff...will come in more mails along the way. We stand in faith that however the outcome we will enjoy the next 6 months worshipping God with what we are doing, ask for His intervention when we reach our limits and expect to see Him come through to make the impossible possible !
